A European bison bull at the edge of BiaΕ‚owieΕΌa forest

Destination guide

Belovezhskaya Pushcha

Europe's last primeval lowland forest β€” and the kingdom of the bison.

πŸ“ Brest region πŸš† ~4Β½ h (via Brest); 1 h from Brest πŸ•’ 1–2 days

This is the forest Europe used to be: oaks that sprouted before Columbus sailed, wolves and lynx in the deep sections, and the continent's largest population of European bison β€” the ancient wild ox saved from extinction here in the 20th century. The Belarusian side of this UNESCO World Heritage forest is wonderfully set up for visitors: paved cycling trails, wildlife enclosures, a nature museum and lodges inside the park itself.

Don't miss

Getting there

From Brest: buses and taxis reach the Kamianiuki park entrance in about an hour. Most visitors do it as a day trip from Brest, but sleeping in the park earns you the quiet hours.

Eat & sleep

The park runs hotels and cottages at Kamianiuki, plus a canteen-style restaurant; agro-usadby cluster in villages around the forest edge. Book park lodging via the official site.
