A white stork wading in the Pripyat floodplain at Turaŭ

Destination guide

Polesie & the Pripyat

Europe's Amazon: a wetland world of storks, floods and thousand-year-old towns.

📍 Gomel & Brest regions 🚆 ~4 h south (via Zhytkavichy) 🕒 1–3 days

Polesie is the vast marshy south — a floodplain the size of a small country where the Pripyat River braids through meadows, oak groves and villages that still live by the water's calendar. Every April the river rises and turns the land into a shallow sea; hundreds of thousands of migrating waterbirds arrive on cue. This is the most otherworldly landscape in Belarus, and the least visited.

Don't miss

Getting there

Take the train toward Gomel as far as Zhytkavichy (~3½ h), then bus or taxi 30 minutes south to Turaŭ. The national park organises excursions from its base near Lyaskavichy.

Eat & sleep

Turaŭ has small hotels and guesthouses; the national park runs its own lodging. Ask for river fish — and for the flood-season boat trips, book a local guide ahead in March.
